FORINA Facilitates YAYORIN and FNPF in Organizing Training on Forest and Land Fire Prevention and Management in Orangutan Habitats

On October 2-3, 2023, the Masyarakat Peduli Api (MPA) (Community Fire Awareness Group) participated in an intensive training as part of a collaborative effort between FORINA, the Indonesian Orangutan Foundation (YAYORIN), and the Friends of National Park Foundation (FNPF). This initiative aimed to support the government in preventing and managing forest and land fires (KARHUTLA) in Central Kalimantan, particularly in protecting orangutan habitats, which are increasingly under threat.

This training is expected to have a significant positive impact on orangutan habitats. By improving community awareness and skills in fire management, the risk of forest fires can be minimized. Active community involvement in environmental protection also strengthens conservation efforts and reduces pressure on orangutan habitats. This represents a concrete step by FORINA in facilitating orangutan conservation efforts. Through this collaboration, FORINA not only connects local communities but also enhances their capacity as the frontline guardians of orangutan habitats.

Training on Fire Prevention and Management

The training was attended by 12 MPA members from Kotawaringin Barat and Sukamara Lamandau. Participants gained in-depth knowledge on forest fire prevention and management strategies from experienced experts. Topics covered in the training included:

• The impact of KARHUTLA on the orangutan ecosystem

• Effective prevention efforts

• The crucial role of communities in fire management

An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to share experiences and develop follow-up plans. Not only theoretical lessons, but participants also took part in field exercises with Manggala Agni (the Indonesian Forest Fire Control Brigade) and PMI (Indonesian Red Cross). During these sessions, they learned firefighting techniques and first aid for victims.

• Manggala Agni introduced fire suppression tools and emergency techniques

• PMI trained participants in first aid and victim evacuation

These simulations were crucial in equipping MPA members with the necessary skills to respond to future forest fires effectively.

Establishing the MPA Communication Forum

As a result of the training, participants agreed to establish the MPA Communication Forum, connecting MPA members from Kotawaringin Barat and Sukamara Lamandau with Manggala Agni Regional Operations III in Central Kalimantan. This forum serves as an effective coordination platform, enabling faster communication and better-organized responses in emergency situations.

The Importance of Collaboration in Preventing Forest Fires

Iman Sapari, M.Si, Director of YAYORIN, emphasized the crucial role of communities in preventing forest fires.

“Collaboration between communities and relevant institutions is key to tackling growing environmental challenges. The community must take the lead in protecting forests, not only for orangutans but also for environmental sustainability in the future.”

The dedication shown by MPA members during the training reflects their commitment to environmental conservation. Basuki Budi Santoso, Manager of Borneo Friends of National Park, expressed optimism that MPA and forest fire volunteers could become a solution to tackling fires in vulnerable areas.

“With the establishment of fire awareness communities, we are optimistic that fires can be better managed and prevented before they spread.”

This initiative not only serves as a concrete step in protecting orangutan habitats but also strengthens local community networks in preventing and managing forest fires.
